Tea Explained - From Leaf to Cup

Just like coffee, tea has its own origins, harvest seasons, and quality markers. This guide explains common tea terms you may see on our offerings, helping you better understand where your tea comes from and what makes each one unique.
What Does Organic Mean?
Organic tea is grown and processed without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and is certified to meet organic standards. This focuses on responsible farming practices and careful handling from leaf to cup.
Tea-Growing Regions
Assam
Located in northeastern India, Assam is known for producing bold, malty, full-bodied black teas. These teas are often used in breakfast-style blends and pair well with milk.
Ceylon
Ceylon tea comes from Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon). These teas are typically bright and brisk, with a clean finish. Flavor varies depending on elevation and growing conditions.
Darjeeling
Grown in the high-altitude foothills of northern India, Darjeeling teas are known for their aromatic character and nuanced flavors. They tend to be lighter and more delicate than most black teas.
Harvest Seasons (Flushes)
A flush refers to the period when tea leaves are harvested during the growing season.
Second Flush (2nd Flush)
The second harvest of the year, usually in late spring or early summer. Second flush teas are typically fuller-bodied with more developed flavor compared to earlier harvests.
Tea Leaf Grades
Tea grades describe the size and quality of the leaf, not the strength of the tea.
OP (Orange Pekoe)
A traditional grade indicating long, whole, unbroken tea leaves. Despite the name, it has no connection to oranges. OP teas are known for balance and clarity in the cup.
TGFOP (Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe)
A higher whole-leaf grade that includes a generous amount of golden tips—young leaf buds that contribute depth, complexity, and aroma.
Putting It All Together
